Our birthday is the date to which no one is indifferent.

The majority celebrate it, considering it an important date.

Some ignore it on purpose. Others have other strategies, some even hate it. And everyone has a different reason because the meaning they give to this number is different.

Why is birthday important? Let’s see together 5 reasons:

1. Marks the anniversary of our coming into this world

It looks like the discovery of hot water, and it is, but sometimes we forget trivial things: it’s the date that gave shape to our existence, more precisely the body refined to the point of being able to live independently. This awareness should be enough for us to express, if not daily, then at least on birthdays, gratitude for the simple fact of being alive;

2. It is an opportunity to take stock of our life, a kind of preparation of the budget

It can be the evaluation of the whole journey since birth, 12 months since the previous birthday or a significant period for us (for example, last decade).

What has changed and in what direction?

How much have we achieved of what we set out to do? If we hadn’t set anything beforehand, do we want to continue like this or consider starting to do so, imagining what changes we’d like to make in the near future?

What are the wishes that we would like to realize in the next 12 months?

This can refer to the various aspects: how we would like our body to be physically, how we would like to change mentally, which emotions we would like to experience more, or which emotions we would like to process and put an end to (anger, pain, distrust…), and finally there are the skills we want to develop or enhance;

3. It’s kind of a personal New Year’s Eve

How do we want to celebrate it? With who? In what place? Sometimes it could be the symbol of our rebirth in some area. If there was a “blue fairy” or the goldfish, which wish (or more wishes) would we want it to grant us?

4. It can be an opportunity to make a real project made up of well-defined objectives

Each month could start the realization of a goal. Some goals are short-term, such as a trip or a training course (perhaps something we’ve been putting off for years). Other goals are long-term, and taking a first step is crucial (even if we know it will take many months or years to finish it). In some cases the goal may be to finish (a relationship that no longer has a reason to exist, or a path that we started a long time ago but then abandoned halfway through. The important thing is to define very well, as much as possible concrete, each goal (even the very small one, which seems to us does not need to be written down), and here a coach can be of great help.Let’s go back to the obvious, which is never as obvious as it seems;

5. The birthday reminds us of another important thing: we will not live forever

However we have lived so far, the main question is: How do I want to continue to spend the time that I have left?

This question, as simple as it is powerful, can give us some interesting insights into the meaning we give to our existence.

Sometimes, we hate our birthday because it reminds us of something we’ve overlooked in our life so far and maybe we’ve gone a little “astray” from what was our dream ever since we were asked the question: “What do you want to be when you grow up ?”

And you, how do you treat your birthday? What are your ways of handling it? Do you have a ritual of your own to treat this date?
